From Small Beginnings
Chris Barton, a computer scientist and professor of nuclear physics, essentially had technology ingrained in him from birth. Because of his distinct ancestry, he was born with an unquenchable curiosity about the world and an intense love of technology. His 1998 entry into the world of start-ups signaled the start of an odyssey that would fundamentally alter how we listen to music.

An Innovative Concept
Chris had an epiphany while interning at MSN, a Microsoft subsidiary. He loved music and knew how annoying it may be to hear a catchy song on the radio and not be able to identify it. He was inspired to act and come up with a remedy by this aggravation. He had an idea for a device that would make it simple for people to recognize music that is playing nearby.
Shazam's Birth
When Shazam was launched in 2000, it was a quite different app than the sleek one we know now. In its initial iteration, users had to enter a four-digit number in order to record the music that was playing. Following the recording of the music, a voice would identify the track and return it to the user; this was a paid service for each track.
A Step Up to Achievement
Shazam was 10 years ahead of its time when the iPhone finally arrived in 2007. Shazam had already established a place for itself as a mobile application. It came as no surprise, then, that it became an essential tool for everyone using a smartphone very fast.
The Last Victory
Shazam's potential was seen by Apple, which has a sharp eye for innovation and strategic acquisitions. As a result, the company decided to buy Shazam in 2018 for an incredible $400 million. Sixth largest acquisition ever made by Apple.
